Inspiration behind the day

“The guiding line for our wedding planning was that we wanted this whole event to be something natural for everyone. We wanted an afternoon that our guests would find pleasant with an atmosphere as warm and intimate as possible, even though we had around 120 guests. This afternoon includes both the ceremony and Hors d’oeuvres. We also wanted the party to look like something we could have thrown at home, in order for everybody to have fun and feel like being herself.

We already tried to make this clear to everyone in the wedding invitation. The invitations were created by my husband and myself (he is a graphic artist and handled all the drawings; I took care of the layout), and we had them letterpress printed. The invitations included 4 coupons. Besides the traditional announcement card, which also specified the time and place for the dinner/buffet, we added a coupon taking the form of a personal letter to the guests, giving more details about our love for each other, what getting married to each other meant to us, and the kind of day we were looking for, to let everybody know the mindset we were into. The invitations also included a transparent map indicating how to reach the place as well as a coupon with our blog address (where people could also confirm their presence)”.

DIYs

“The whole wedding was a DIY. It felt right to us to think about everything and be creative for our special day.

For Marcio’s Brazilian guests to feel at home, we tried to add a lot of little details. For instance, we got some Brazilian cigarillos for the party, I made some little flags for the groomsmen and I also used a typical Brazilian bracelet as the blue item of the bride.

The wedding took place in an ancient mill and its backyards, so we had few decorations to think of because everything was already so naturally beautiful and rustic. As the parking was a few meters away, we indicated the way through the forest to the party, in the same style as the numerous hiking paths of the region. As the wedding took place outside and as the backyards were kind of expanded, I made a map of the important places (buffet, drinks, toilets, etc) using paint and wool. I had fun preparing all these!

Marcio is a graphic artist but he also used to paint a lot. Hence we had the idea to draw a draft of us two on a painting and let the guests add their personal stroke to it.The draft was inspired by a picture of us two, the one we also based the design of our invitations on. We printed many copies of this very picture as a souvenir for the guests. Another DIY we made was some paper birds that we hung on the ceiling: it had a great effect in the old barn!

The decoration of the tables was done by my mum. She has a passion for old pots and was very happy to use them for our wedding decoration! She was also the one who prepared the bride’s bouquet. The only restriction I gave her was to exclusively use country flowers. She prepared three bouquets and I just had to pick up the one I loved the most. I then decided to make a game out of it: at the party, the guests were presented all bouquets and had to vote for the one they thought to be the bride’s one.The winner’s price was the bouquet!!

We also had the chance to find an old gramophone and an old camera to decorate the tables. We also put some old frames in trees and then encouraged the guests to take pictures of themselves behind the frames. A friend of mine made some colored paper chains we put in the trees together with the frames.

Actually, for the guests to participate to all the activities (voting for the bouquet, taking pictures behind the frames, recording a souvenir video for us, writing a memory in the guest book) we hung some reminders on the wall, in a style close to the invitations”.

DIYs

Any advice for those planning now?

“I’m thinking on three advices for those planning now.

When you get engaged, I think that you start thinking about the wedding almost immediately. In my case, I started to have many ideas very soon (about the decoration namely), but I waited to get the stuff I needed because I thought that it was too soon and that maybe I would change my mind later. I think this was a big mistake because when you have something on your mind, there are few chances you’ll forget about it soon. In my case, I ended up sticking to my first ideas and the only difference was that I got less time to prepare everything or think about more fun stuff to do for the wedding.Thankfully nearly everything went well, but I would have been glad if someone had given me this advice during my preparation.

It’s very common to have some disagreements with your parents. I learned this when it happened to me and started exchanging about it with other brides. But in the end, I think it is worth arguing a little to get your dream day. First, maybe that’s part of asserting oneself as part of one’s own family, and second, in the end everybody will forget about it anyway and it is really a great sensation for the bride and groom to feel that everything is just as you wanted it to be.

My last piece of advice is that it is interesting to get advice from everyone, but don’t be obsessed with them. I got advice from many people concerning the D-day (don’t let go of your husband’s hand, take a moment to leave the party and enjoy it from the outside, etc) which I have no doubt were great advice, but I think everybody should find his own way of living this moment. I ended up not following any of them and the wedding day was for me actually sweeter than in my sweetest dreams! So the only advice I would give concerning this point is that this day is about you and your husband, and if you don’t feel things are going well, then you should think about how or what you could change to spend a better moment, but if not, don’t let others’ advice go on your head and spend the day the way you feel it right to. Be yourself!”

Favorite memory of the day?

“Bride: One of my favorite memories was before entering the church. The two of us, the close family and our bridesmaids and groomsmen were outside, and we knew that all the people we invited were already inside waiting for us, being here for us. It was a great sensation. Then when I entered I saw everyone, only people I knew and loved, seating next to each other, from the old friend you used to hang out with when you were twelve to the one you got to know little time ago in a whole different context. I think this was one of my favorite moment of the day!

Groom: I got the best sensation about one hour after everyone joined the party place. As mentioned, we really wanted the atmosphere to be friendly and intimate and this was the moment when I realized we had succeeded! All the things we had prepared (the painting, the lollipops, the guestbook,…) were coming to life and everybody was laughing, eating or dancing. It actually was the best party we ever threw!”

Me encanta….
